Heartworm Testing

Every dog six months of age or older is checked for heartworms at the Bay Area SPCA. Dogs who test negative are started on heartworm preventative and remain on preventative while they are in our care.

Unfortunately, many of our dogs are testing positive for heartworms. While a heartworm positive dog can be treated if the dog is otherwise healthy, the treatment is very expensive. The treatment cost is based on the body weight of the dog. On average, the cost to our shelter is about $300 per dog. However, the treatment for large dogs is more expensive. Please help us treat our heartworm positive dogs by donating to our heartworm treatment fund. Click here to see our dogs currently waiting heartworm treatment.
